The "R" Word Swap

There are plenty of great and positive words that start with the letter R. Responsible, radiant, reliable, rich, romantic, ravishing, refreshing, reasonable, right... and of course, my favorite R word of all time; RESPECT.

But, sadly, there is another word, an ugly, mean, negative and degrading word, that also starts with R.

Retard, or retarded.

It pains me to even type it.

I have always felt uneasy when it came up in conversation. Growing up, it was a commonly used word by peers and adults when describing something stupid that happened, or something that didn't go right. Sometimes, it was even used to describe how a person was acting.

When Anthony was born, that word took on a whole new meaning.

I am so scared that one day, someone might use it to describe my amazing son. I'm scared of the whispers, and the looks that people might give when he walks into a room. Just thinking about that happening brings a deep shooting pain to my heart. I want to be able to protect him from the world, but what if I cant?

Last week, I heard the R word three times. There were two shows that used the word, and each time I heard it I was surprised and quickly changed the channel. But, the first time I heard it used by a person telling me a story, I wasn't ready for it. That was the first time since Anthony was born that someone said it around me. When it was said, I shot my husband a look, and without any words we had our own conversation. Did you hear that? Yes. I heard it too. Should we say anything? I can't believe it. That really hurt.

We didn't say anything.

I know the person didn't mean to use it to describe a someone, they were using it to describe a situation. But, it all is the same to me. It hurts because people DO use it to make fun of individuals with intellectual disabilities. So really, what is the difference? Any way you spin it, it's a word that is always used in a negative way.

I mentally checked out the rest of the night. I felt like I was going to break down at any given moment. When we got to the car I lost it. I cried because I felt sad, but I mostly cried for Anthony. I don't ever want him to feel that he is different, and I am scared that one day he might be hurt by that word.

What if there comes a day when Anthony, or his siblings, come home from school having heard that word. What will I say if they ask me what it means? How will I look at my beautiful boy and tell him about that horrible word? I am so afraid of that.

There is a man named John Stephens, and he is much braver than I am. He did not stay silent when he heard someone use the R word, instead he decided to do something about it. He has accomplished a lot in his life but I think what he should be most proud of is being able to stand up for those that might not have the ability to stand up for themselves. Like Anthony, John was born with Down syndrome. I hope one day that Anthony will be as strong as this young man. Thank you Mr. Stephens for being an amazing role model for my son, and for me!

In 2012, Ann Coulter tweeted something that sparked a whole lot of controversy. She went on a rant about President Obama and called him a retard. When the public responded with shock and disgust, instead of apologizing she said, “Look, no one would refer to a Down Syndrome child, someone with an actual mental handicap, by saying ‘retard.’ Where do you think the words ‘imbecile,’ ‘idiot,’ ‘moron,’ ‘cretin’ come from? These were all technical terms at one time. ‘Retard’ had been used colloquially to just mean ‘loser’ for 30 years.”

Well, John Stephens did not let that remark go. He responded with powerful words that reached and inspired thousands. His letter to Ann Coulter brought me to tears. He so eloquently was able to put such an ignorant person in her place.

"After I saw your tweet, I realized you just wanted to belittle the President by linking him to people like me.  You assumed that people would understand and accept that being linked to someone like me is an insult and you assumed you could get away with it and still appear on TV.
I have to wonder if you considered other hateful words but recoiled from the backlash.
Well, Ms. Coulter, you, and society, need to learn that being compared to people like me should be considered a badge of honor."- John Stephens
Yes, Mr. Stephens! Yes indeed!

I think that the world IS changing, and the R word is not being used as frequently. BUT, I pray for a day that it is not used at all anymore. I think that if we all take a stand like John Stephens, maybe in our own small way we can make a difference. I am upset with myself that I just let it go and didn't say anything when I heard it the other day. I have to have a voice for my son, and I will no longer accept such an ugly word. I propose a change.... a swap. If you ever catch yourself using that word out of habit, stop and think. Think about my son's innocent face. Could you look at him and call him such a disgusting word? Let's challenge others to swap R words. Instead of using the negative R word, I hope as a society we can think about Respect. If we can teach and practice Respect, than the world might just become a better place. A place where everyone is accepted.

Yesterday my baby turned seven months old! It is hard to believe that he is closer to being a year old than he is to being my newborn baby. Where is the time going? I think this has to be my favorite age so far. He has developed quite the little personality, and is so much fun to play with! I do miss him being a little tiny peanut, and also hate to think of the day when he wont need my help as much anymore. So, I will try to just enjoy the age he is now, because he is so stinking adorable! I hope he doesn't grow up too fast!

* I am way too tired to write captions for all of these pictures tonight. I will think of them tomorrow! For now... I want to see what captions you can all come up with for this picture below. Write your funny caption in the comment section for this post. Have fun! I will pick the best one for a caption when I write them in tomorrow :)

Beautiful Day for a party!

Finally, nice weather! This poor child has been cooped up for months and has only seen the light of day when running out to the car to go to the doctors. Joe and I are protective parents, and I am pretty sure if we could make Anthony a bubble child, we would. Okay, maybe it's not that bad... but we have not wanted to take him out this winter at all unless absolutely necessary.

Today we celebrated Anthony's Poppy's birthday. It was in the 50's but felt more like 100 compared to the weather we have been used to lately. Anthony took his first stroll outside around Mimi and Poppy's neighborhood. He cracks me up when he drives his cars around. He just looks like such a big boy! And yes... the word car in that sentence was plural. Anthony is so spoiled. He has a car at every house. One at Mimi's one at Grammy's and one at our house. Lucky little boy!

We saw a little girl on our walk around the neighborhood in a matching pink car, but Anthony wanted nothing to do with her. I guess he is staying true to his cute girlfriend Antonella back home. What a little gentleman.

Mr. Cool out for his afternoon joy ride

Feelin' the breeze in his hair

My handsome guys!

Silly Aunt Lauran

"Haha you're crazy Auntie, I love you, but you're crazy"

Mimi and Poppy

Seriously, how hilarious is this. He is like a little old man driving around

"Look Ma I found a leaf!"

Love love love

Anthony seems to be a little confused. He forgot for a moment that he was at Mimi's house and instead thought he was at an audition to become the newest member of Kiss. I think he would have been a shoe-in.

Trying to get Anthony to laugh but he wasn't having it

"Woah! What is THAT?"

"Mom why is that fire coming so close to me. Help me mom!"

Tonight when we got home, Anthony was in his diaper on the floor while I got his pajamas ready. I looked over and he rolled to his stomach, put his knees to his chest and inched across the floor. Even though it was one single inch worm movement, I freaked out! And of course when I started video taping him, he did not feel the need to continue. Our little almost seven month old is going to be scooting around the house very soon! Time to start baby proofing everything!

"Oh the Weather Outside is Weather"

Another snow day, another day off school! I think I have lost count at this point. Although it stinks that school is taking days away from the summer, and Joe and I both don't get paid when we're off... I love being stuck home with my family! We get to relax, play with the baby, and take much needed nap shifts!

Our pieced together snow outfit for the baby since he doesn't have a snow suit.

Love my son more than anything in this world

Daddy son love

My two boys

"Hey Mom what is this cold white chair you stuck me in?"

"Ah I hate it mom, my butt is wet! Stop taking pictures and get me the heck out of here!"

"I give up"

"Look how tall I am Mommy! "
**Blog updating--I am in the process of making a new tab for the top of my blog. I am currently writing a section about what to do if you find out your baby has Down syndrome. Keep your eyes out for that in the next few days, and if you know anyone that just found out their baby has Down syndrome you can refer them to that section of my blog.

**Basket update--I created a GoFundMe account where people can donate to help get Beautiful Beginnings to a non-profit status. I am also starting a Facebook page for Beautiful Beginnings to post updates and the GoFundMe account. It will probably be up and running this weekend!

Beautiful Beginnings

Ever since I posted about my basket idea, so many people have contacted me willing to help. The school I work at even held a 50/50 raffle to raise money for the project. (I must add that even the winner of the 50/50 gave me her half to put towards the basket. There are seriously some amazing people in this world!)

So all of this lit a fire under me and I wanted the baskets made right away! The problem was I just didn't know where to start. I was so overwhelmed with the idea of trying to find a lawyer, and fill out all of the IRS paperwork to make it legal. Honestly I never would have thought that starting a non-profit organization would be this intense. I didn't go to school for business, and I don't know the first thing about running a company on my own. I don't have the funds, the space, or the time to make this idea as successful as it could be. That is why I was trying to find help. I wanted someone to help with the legal side. Maybe help me fill out the paperwork and point me in the right direction from there. I also thought that it would be nice to have help fundraising, and collecting donations for the baskets. It just seemed a little much to take on all by myself. For a little while now I have been trying to contact a few local Down syndrome interest groups/associations, and have not heard anything back. I finally was in contact with someone that was excited to bring the idea up during the board meeting of one of the local groups. I was so excited, I went on the computer during my lunch break, wrote up a proposal, and designed a label for the company. I pressed send on the email and couldn't wait to hear back because I knew in my heart that this was just the start of something amazing. But, this horrible winter weather struck again and because of snow the board meeting was cancelled. I had to wait a few more days for a response.

When I finally called to ask how the meeting went, I was a little shocked. Honestly I was confused, and I still am. Basically, in so many words they said that they can not help me in the way that I would have liked them to. If they were to take on the legal aspect of the organization then they said that it wouldn't really be under my control anymore. They thought it was a good idea, but from what I understood, they were not going to help.

Ugh. After that conversation I felt pretty defeated. I thought that I was close to getting it all started. Back to the drawing board. Now what? There are so many questions swirling around in my brain and I just cant seem to figure out where to start.

How do I find a lawyer that will help me, free of charge? How will I get these baskets made and filled with everything all on my own? Where will they be stored? (Lord knows there is no space in my small house!) How will I pay for it all? How will I find the time to drive each basket to different hospitals in the area when a new baby is born?

I believe in this idea SO much, and know that one day it will be just like I picture it in my head. I just need someone to show me how to get it all started and where to go from there. Then I can take control. I'll start small.. and then hopefully have the experience and funds to expand. There is a need for this organization, and I know it will make a difference. I know that it will grow to be something amazing.. it will just take a little time to figure out how to get to that point. I will continue to research and learn about this process so that this idea doesn't fail.

I have had a few questions about what my ideas were for items in the basket. This is what I was thinking:

-A letter explaining the purpose for the basket
-My story, along with other local family stories
-Early intervention information
-Local Down syndrome interest group information
-The Holland poem
-"Bloom" by Kelle Hampton (If you have never checked out her blog, you must do so now, she was a HUGE inspiration for sharing my story.)
 -A picture frame
-Baby items; a baby hat, baby blanket, teddy bear ...etc
-"Gifts" and "Gifts 2" (books filled with amazing stories about Down syndrome)
-Good/Positive online resources like facebook groups, blogs, and websites
-A congratulation letter from an adult with Down syndrome.
-A children's story about Down syndrome ( I still am deciding which story I like best, there are a few contenders. Honestly I wish I had one written because then I would use that ha!)
-a Down syndrome ribbon or pin

I know that there are a lot of people that want to donate and help me raise money to start this project, but I am not sure of how to go about collecting that. I think that it might need to be a "legal" non-profit organization before I can start a website where people can donate. Who knows... that's something I will have to look into! As for now, just know that from the bottom of my heart I appreciate all of the interest in wanting to donate. It really makes me so happy to know how many people there are willing to help!

I know that when this project is successful, we will bring happiness back to the delivery room. All children deserve to be celebrated on their birthday.

And I will end the post with some recent pictures of the little man, because I know that is why you really read this blog! He is just so darn cute.

Such a little love monster!

I guess I forgot to mention that our heat has been broken for almost a week now. We hate it, and so does Anthony!

But, that does mean that we get to snuggle close to keep warm! My favorite !

We have resulted to lock-down in our upstairs bedroom where the space heater can heat the room quickly! We also love the heated blanket!

Being a silly man in the heated blanket

So much love!

Caught mid-yawn. Gotta love those baby yawns!

He found his feet recently, and it is adorable

Such a happy baby!!
